The Medical Institute of Kentucky Medical Administrative Assistant with Electronic Health Records and Medical Billing and Coding is a course that runs for 30 weeks. Students will engage in a stimulating range of learning activities that include scheduling appointments, legal and ethical responsibilities, telephone procedures, filing procedures, medical records, and basic bookkeeping knowledge. Students will also learn how to manage health information, in both paper and electronic format, numbering and filing systems, record storage and circulation, health care delivery systems, health care settings, health data collection, coding and reimbursements, and legal aspects. The student will also learn revenue cycle monitoring, processing an insurance claim, patient payments, legal aspects of health insurance, HIPAA and compliance, guidelines for proper use of ICD-10 CM and ICD-10-PCS codes, and more. Career Development is also obtained throughout the program.
The Healthcare employee with Medical Administrative Assistant with Electronic Health Records and Medical Billing and Coding training will perform routine clerical and organizational tasks. They organize files, draft messages, schedule and coordinate appointments, ensure compliance with procedures, transcribe dictation, routine clerical and organizational tasks of documenting, transmitting, and securing patient information. Performing patient record audits for government or insurance requirements, processing Release of Information (ROI) requests for medical records. As well as manage insurance claims, invoices, and payments. They use various classification systems to code and categorize patient information for reimbursement purposes, for databases and registries, and to maintain patients’ medical and treatment histories. Employment would be found within hospitals or physicians’ offices.
According to The Department of Labor, the overall employment of Administrative Assistants and medical records is expected to grow 7 percent from 2020 to 2030. Medical Administrative Assisting is the only occupation that is expected to have much faster than average employment growth. This is driven by the rapid growth of the healthcare industry.
The Medical Administrative Assistant with Electronic Health Records and Medical Billing and Coding student will complete instructional and simulation laboratory procedures for a period of up to 30 weeks in length. Successful completion of all courses is required to receive a program certificate of completion.
