What you'll learn

The Medical Institute of Kentucky Phlebotomy-Cardio Technician program is a course that runs for 24 weeks. Students will engage in a stimulating range of learning activities that include cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, cardiovascular terminology, medical law and ethics, safety and infection control, venipuncture equipment and procedure, dermal puncture equipment and procedures, venipuncture complications, and other special collections, patient assessment techniques, how to complete and document an EKG, EKG basic interpretations, and more. Career Development is also obtained throughout the program.

The Healthcare employee with Phlebotomy-Cardio Technician training will perform venipuncture blood draws for tests, transfusions, donations, or research. They also explain procedures to patients and assist in the recovery of patients with adverse reactions, and administer tests to determine the cardiovascular health of patients. Duties also include performing diagnostic tests on patients, keeping patients informed on every step of the procedure, monitoring patient blood pressure, perform various tests on a patient’s heart and lungs, though primarily they perform electrocardiograms (EKGs).

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall employment of cardiovascular technologists is projected to grow 14 percent from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations. About 12,000 openings for cardiovascular technologists are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.

The Phlebotomy-Cardio Technician student will complete instructional and simulation laboratory procedures for a period of up to 24 weeks in length. Successful completion of all courses is required to receive a program certificate of completion.
