What you'll learn

The Medical Institute of Kentucky Phlebotomy Technician program is a course that runs for 14 weeks. Students will engage in a stimulating range of learning activities that include cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, cardiovascular terminology, medical law and ethics, safety and infection control, venipuncture equipment and procedure, dermal puncture equipment and procedures, venipuncture complications, and other special collections. Career Development is also obtained throughout the program.

The Healthcare employee with Phlebotomy Technician training performs venipuncture blood draws for diagnostic testing, transfusions, donations, or research. They also explain procedures to patients and assist in the recovery of patients with adverse reactions. Employment options for a Phlebotomy Technician employment options include general medical and surgical hospitals, medical and diagnostic laboratories, ambulatory health care centers, or physician offices.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, phlebotomists are part of the medical technology industry, which is currently on the rise. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects this industry to grow 22 percent from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations. Driving the growth of this occupation are the combined factors of a growing population, new and improved medical testing, and the increased availability of medical services. Because of these factors, it is unlikely that there will be a shortage of phlebotomy positions in the near future.

The Phlebotomy Technician student will complete instructional and simulation laboratory procedures for a period of up to 14 weeks. Successful completion of all courses is required to receive a program certificate of completion.

Program Objectives

Many states have licensing or certification requirements for those performing the role of a Phlebotomist. This TMIKY program is aligned with and/or prepares candidates for certification or licensure in each state except California and Washington.

TMIKY training and related target certifications may be accepted and/or approved by your state of residency, employers reserve the right to dictate experience, prerequisite education, or certification/licensure requirements for their positions. We strongly advise students to research target job state requirements, restrictions, job posts prior to enrollment to ensure eligibility upon graduation.
